Few labels have branched out and departed from the mainstream as much as Monstercat has since its launch five years ago. The Canadian record label has expanded and adapted with the times and has been a solid representation of the ever-changing times which is required to survive in today’s music industry. Labels today have to be much more than just an outlet for releasing music, they have to connect with the fans in new and innovative ways and that is what Monstercat has been able to do. They hold an event series at gaming conventions called AFK, they have a 24/7 Twitch radio station, and host unique initiatives such as their ‘connect’ feature which lets users host the label’s music without fear of getting ‘strikes’ against their page. This has culminated into tremendous success for this independent record label which has just celebrated its fifth anniversary.
Over the past couple of weeks, to celebrate and to reward the fans, new and old, they have been releasing free music for us all to download as a compilation album. The album features some of the label’s hottest artists such as Pegboard Nerds, Noisestorm, Stonebank, and more. In total there are 10 songs on there and all live up to the label’s massive hype. It blends together the sounds that the label has been pushing for years now and what they want going forward. It shows how the label has evolved with their sound.
To close off the celebration the label released a mashup video from Didrick, such as they did to celebrate their third anniversary. Didrick provides the energy we are all looking for for such a celebration. It really embodies what Monstercat is all about and highlights the great music that they have released.
Going forward Monstercat is launching what they are calling Monstercat 2.0. This is not them throwing away their past or departing from it, but rather evolving with the times. This new platform will include revamping ‘connect,’ more AFK and label showcases, and encouraging their artists to continue to branch out and try new things. The team over at Monstercat is really looking to push the boundaries of the electronic music scene and giving their fans and listeners the best experience as possible. We are living in exciting times here in terms of the diversity of music that is out there and the ease in digesting all of it. Monstercat is certainly embracing all of that and we are excited to see what the next five years holds for them!
